Debates

AFCO I

Toward a more democratic Europe: The Spring 2018 Eurobarometer survey found that 48% of Europeans tend to not trust EU institutions. When it comes to the European Parliament, a lot of this distrust may be attributed to a current disconnect between the Parliament and its citizens. What steps should the European Parliament take to integrate and represent all European citizens in its work?

AFCO II

For thought-through divorce decisions: The Brexit referendum campaign has been widely criticised as biased by missing and misleading information, foreign interferences, and multiple breaches of electoral laws, putting into question the legitimacy of the vote. In light of the Brexit case, how should the EU ensure future decisions to leave the Union are informed, transparent and democratically legitimate?

EMPL I

The future of work: With the accelerated development of autonomous machines and artificial intelligence, technology is gaining the ability to perform tasks currently exclusive to humans, many of which provide people with employment. How should the European Union respond to the disruption in the labour market caused by automation while ensuring competitiveness of the European economy?

EMPL II

Managing the migrant crisis through solidarity, humanity and community: Europe has experienced a massive influx of migrants and refugees since 2015, fleeing their home countries for various reasons. However, once in Europe, they are faced with dire conditions, such as overcrowded detention centers, low job prospects and prejudice due to the current political climate. How can Member States ensure successful integration of an increasingly important part of the population through employment and education?

ENVI

Living safely in times of a changing climate: Europe and the world has seen a rise in natural disasters such as floods and wildfires caused by climate change. This in turn increases security risks such as scarce resources, weakened infrastructure and endangered lives. How can the EU and its Member States implement and change their long term strategies to prevent these risks and create a more resilient society?

ITRE I

An Error of the Past or the Saviour of our Future? In light of the nuclear disaster in Fukushima and the EU's growing demand for clean energy, what should be the role of nuclear energy in the European Union’s energy mix?

ITRE II

Managing the digital transformation of our society and economy: Steps have been taken towards a standardised and competitive digital industry since the initiative on Digitising European Industry was launched in April 2016, although considerable progress gaps still have to be tackled. How can the EU ensure transnational cooperation, increased public-private investment partnerships and the correct legislative tools to facilitate the industry digitisation?

LIBE

Rise of Extremism in Europe and the future of democracy: With parties like PIS (PL) and Fidesz (HU) taking over political power, the EU has been seeking to counter the impact of far-right parties on European democracies. Whilst making sure that freedom of expression is provided for all political actors, how can the EU proceed against extremist parties breaching democratic values and violating human rights?
