Given the symbolic and materialistic importance of the open border on the island of Ireland, how best can the EU mediate the tension between the United Kingdom’s desire to regain control of its borders, whilst recognising the potential negative e ects on peace and commerce in Northern Ireland and the Good Friday agreement, should a hard border return?
